The KAI N5230 is a pair of 9" (23 cm) cutting shears made of 5Cr15MoV stainless steel (56 HRC) with full-tang construction and a strongly offset elastomer soft handle. The lower blade rests flat on the table while cutting, so the fabric is barely lifted; cutting length 9.5 cm, weight 130 g.
The tailor's shears and cutting shears of the KAI N5000 Series are designed for professional fabric cutting in tailoring, studios and garment production. Their satin-finished blades are made of 5Cr15MoV stainless steel hardened to 56 HRC (+1.5/−2) and extend through the handles (full tang). The elastomer soft-plastic handles stay comfortable during long cutting runs.
A brass adjustment screw lets you readjust the blade tension. Lengths range from 8" (21 cm) to 11" (27.5 cm), plus versions with a micro-serrated edge (N5210SE), for left-handers (N5210L) and with a wide handle (N5220). The manufacturer is the Japanese cutlery maker KAI, founded in Seki in 1908.

Frequently asked questions
Which size is best for cutting fabric?
The N5210 at 8" (21 cm) is the compact core model for everyday cutting. Longer blades such as the N5250 (10", 25 cm) or N5275 (11", 27.5 cm) cover more distance per cut, for example along long cutting edges.
What is the micro-serration on the N5210SE for?
On the N5210SE one blade has a fine micro-serrated edge. It holds the fibres during the cut so that smooth and slippery fabrics do not slide out of the shears.
How does the N5000 Series differ from the 7000 Series?
The 7000 Series has 3.7–4 mm thick AUS8A steel blades hardened to 60.5 HRC and a duplex interlock screw, but no elastomer handles. The N5000 Series uses 5Cr15MoV steel at 56 HRC, elastomer soft handles and a brass adjustment screw.
