The tatting shuttle is the classic tool for tatting, also known as frivolité or shuttle lace. This knotting technique uses double stitches, rings, chains and picots to create delicate lace for doilies, edgings, collars, jewellery and embellishments. The shuttle carries the working thread and is passed through the thread loop for each knot.
This Prym shuttle is made of plastic and is 6.5 cm long – a convenient size to guide comfortably between the fingers while tatting. Wind the thread onto the central post before starting, without overfilling it, so that the shuttle passes easily through the loop. For two-colour work, two shuttles are used.
